Junee hot contender for title

JUNEE further proved its Group Nine premiership credentials by toppling fellow contender Brothers 22-16 at Wagga Cricket Ground yesterday.

Playing in front of a healthy crowd, Junee produced a remarkable second-half comeback to register a confidence-boosting victory.

Down 16-0 early in the first half and 16-6 at half-time, Junee came out firing in the second stanza and scored two tries in the space of 10 minutes to snatch the lead 18-16.

Junee captain-coach Adam Perry could not pinpoint the reason behind the second-half turnaround but claimed the triumph would hold the Diesels in positive stead heading into the finals.

“I am really happy with the effort of all the guys,” Perry said.

“The execution wasn’t very good but the effort was great.

“Brothers are a quality team and will be in the finals so obviously I am happy with the way the boys fought back and won.”

Brothers zoomed out of the blocks with the opening three tries of the game thanks largely to the creative brilliance of hooker Matt Ridley.

Ridley burrowed over the try-line for the first four-pointer of the game in the 11th minute, before breaking through Junee’s defensive line and linking up with winger Glenn Petersen with a wonderful long pass for the second try in the 20th minute.

When classy five-eighth Peter Little sliced through Junee’s defence from a scrum to score in the 24th minute, Brothers looked unstoppable.

However, Junee second-rower Sam Quinn, who was sensational all game, ran on to a sweet short-ball from Perry in the 34th minute to score next to the posts to cut the margin to 16-6 at the break.

The second half belonged to Junee with Perry calling the shots out of dummy-half and Quinn and centre Damian Willis running riot with the ball in their hands.

Junee got off to the perfect start when halfback Jay Little put Quinn across the stripe in the 48th minute with a nice short pass.

Brothers had the opportunity to level the scores in the 74th minute when they were awarded a penalty by referee Bernie Nix well within kicking range.

But Brothers chose to go for the try and it proved costly as the team turned the ball over and Willis scored the match-winner for Junee less than two minutes later.
